Media
products can be classified into categories or genres. The word 'genre' comes
from the French word meaning 'type' or 'class'. Media genres appear within a
medium (film, television) such as the "horror" film or the television
"situation comedy". On the
other hand, a subgenre is when you combine two genres together. For example, we
often see romance and comedy go together (rom-com) and also drama and action compliment
each other well.
A hybrid
is different to a subgenre because a hybrid is three or more genres fused
together. An example of a hybrid is combining action with a rom-com and thriller and
this can be seen in the film 'Mr And Mrs Smith'.
In the film industry, we often
see the thriller genre hybridised with other genres as well. The thriller
genre can be hybridised with horror and action and an example of this is 'The
Conjuring'. The Conjuring is about a family who move into a house and are
unknowing of the sprit that possesses it. It's well recognised as a horror
however it contains some intense moments of action especially towards the end
of the film. This means it could easily verify as a thriller
hybridised with action and horror.
Thriller
films can also be hybridised with action and adventure. An example of an action adventure thriller film is 'Die Hard' or 'The Dark Knight'. Die
Hard includes a compelling storyline and moments of nerve-wracking suspense so
it fits the thriller genre well. It is also action-packed and stars Bruce Willis who is renowned for his roles in action films which means it
fits the action adventure genre too.
Finally, thriller can be hybridised with crime and action too and an example of a crime thriller is 'heat' and 'The departed'. We would expect to see a more complicated story line in these films which would allow the audience to become fully engrossed in the plot as they would have to concentrate all the way throughout the film.
